Foot Problems and Foot Care

Foot rot disease is a serious problem when it appears in a herd. It is usually brought into the herd with a new goat
you just purchased. Foot rot is caused by at least two different organisms. The infection spreads under the horny
tissue of the hoof, separating it from the soft tissue underneath.

Symptoms
The first symptom is lameness. Goats show soreness when they walk and take their weight off the infected foot
when at rest. Goats having two infected front feet may go down on their knees to graze.

Prevention
Provide a dry place for your goats. Bacteria can live outside the foot longer in warm, moist conditions. Also, scald,
(a dermatitis between the claws), is caused by goats walking through mud and wet grass. It irritates the skin
between the claws, creating an opening in the foot and allowing the ineffective  bacteria to enter. When
purchasing goats, buy those free of disease. Isolate all new goats from the rest of the herd until you are sure that
they are not harboring the  disease.

Before adding any new goats to your herd, trim and hand treat their feet with a foot rot treatment. If there is any
sign of foot rot, keep the new goat isolated and continue treatment until they are safe to add to the herd, or return
them to the seller.

Treatment
There are many effective treatments to prevent foot rot. Combining the following treatments is more effective than
using a single treatment. Separate healthy goats from infected ones.  Pare hooves to remove or expose infected
tissue. This is extremely important crevices containing unexposed bacteria can heal over.  Once the rotten tissues
are exposed, put the goats through a foot bath.

  • 10 percent zinc sulfate - add eight pounds of zinc sulfate plus one-half cup  of laundry detergent
to 10 gallons of water. Zinc sulfate is the product  considered most effective in foot baths.
  • 10 percent copper sulfate - add eight pounds of copper sulfate to 10 gallons of water. Hot water will
hasten dissolving. (Maybe restricted or banned for meat goats)
  • 10 percent formalin - one gallon of formaldehyde (37 percent formalin) to 9 gallons of water.

There are commercial foot baths and treatments. Best results come from  standing goat in solution for  a least 10-
